The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

The Early Years Foundation Stage (2012) is the statutory framework for setting standards for learning, development and care for children from birth to five put in place by the Governmental Department of Education and inspected by Ofsted.

In order to help you as a parent or carer find out more about how your child is learning and developing during their first five years, in relation to the EYFS please browse the following booklet (What to expect, when?, a parents guide). Children develop more rapidly during the first five years of their lives than at any other time. This booklet has been written to help you as a parent know what to expect during these vitally important years.

Wellingtons Day Nurseries shapes its practice by the 4 overarching principles of the EYFS:

  • Every child is unique

  • Children learn to be strong and independent through positive relationships

  • Children develop in enabling environments where their individual needs are met

  • Children learn and develop in different ways and at different rates

Providing wide ranging resources and activities for the Prime Curriculum Areas:

  • Physical Development

  • Communication and Language

  • Personal, social and emotional development

Practitioners continue to support children’s learning in the Specific Curriculum Areas:

  • Literacy

  • Mathematics

  • Understanding of the world

  • Expressive arts

Health and Safety

The safety and welfare of each child is paramount at Wellingtons Day Nurseries but you won’t see children ‘wrapped in cotton wool’, as the best way for children to stay safe is for them to be supported by practitioners to develop independence and risk awareness skills. Effectively balancing challenge with risk creates exciting environments for children to be nurtured.

There is a full Health & Safety Management System which ensures that the nursery areas indoors and out are safe for the age and stage of the children using it.

Additional Needs

All children are unique and require differing support and care through their early years. Where a child comes to us with an extra need, or a need has been identified whilst with us, we will work with you and other professionals to ensure that the nursery can meet that child’s needs to ensure that they have every opportunity to fulfil their potential.
